Homemade Onion Dip Recipe

September 30, 2014 by Lisa Pinney

I have ALWAYS loved onion dip and chips!

One of my earliest memories as a little girl is of me sitting on the kitchen counter top with some chips along with the onion dip that always came in a metal container….

and my brother asking me if I needed a little more dip on my chip–sarcastically, of course!

I think my ratio was 1 Tablespoon of dip to every chip!

Well, I’ve never made my onion dip from scratch until now and WOW!!

I will never make it another way again…I bet you won’t either!

The simple but delicious ingredients…

Slice the onions thin…

Add them to your skillet with the 2 TBSP oil…

Keep stirring and they’ll begin to brown like this…

This is when you’ll add the 1 tsp sugar…

and caramelize a bit more…

After the onions are cool, add the buttermilk and sour cream to your food processor…

Along with those yummy onions…

Blend until you reach the consistency you desire…

It will be most delicious looking like this in your beautiful serving bowl!

Enjoy!

Homemade Onion Dip Recipe

  • Author: Lisa Pinney

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 sweet onions, sliced thin
  • 2 TBSP olive oil
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

Heat the oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat.

Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally.

When they begin to brown, sprinkle 1 tsp sugar over the onions and continue to cook until they reach a caramel color.

When done, drain on paper towels, transfer to a bowl and chill about 1 hour.

After that time, place the onions, sour cream, buttermilk and salt in your food processor. Blend until combined.

Chill another hour for the flavors to develop and serve with chips.
