Mardi Gras Donuts Recipe

These were simply delightful!

Such a fun little treat to to whip up

for your Mardi Gras party!


  • 3 cans Pillsbury Crescent Dough sheets
  • Bavarian Filling:
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1/4 c cake flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 TBSP unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Glaze:
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 3 TBSP milk
  • Yellow, green & purple sugar
  • Oil for frying


Step 1

Making the Bavarian Cream:

Step 2

In medium saucepan, whisk together sugar and flour.

Step 3

Add 1 cup milk and salt whisking continually.

Step 4

Bring to a low boil over medium heat.

Step 5

In a medium bowl, whisk egg yolks.

Step 6

Gradually add half of hot mixture to the egg mixture, whisking constantly.

Step 7

Now whisk all of the egg mixture into the remaining milk mixture in saucepan.

Step 8

Cook, whisking constantly until thickened.

Step 9

Remove from heat and whisk in butter and vanilla.

Step 10

Let stand for 10 minutes then transfer to large bowl; cover with plastic wrap.

Step 11

Refrigerate until cold.

Step 12

Making the doughnuts:

Step 13

Open the 3 crescent dough sheets and place them on top of each other on a cutting board.

Step 14

Fold sides into the middle where they will meet.

Step 15

Taking a 1 1/2 " or 2" round cutter, cut 6-8 circles on each side of the dough.

Step 16

Heat 4" oil in a Dutch oven to 360 degrees.

Step 17

Fry 2-3 at a time for 1 1/2 min on each side.

Step 18

Drain on wire rack; cool at least 10 minutes.

Step 19

Place custard in piping bag fitted with tip for filling the donuts.

Step 20

Mix 1 cup confectioners sugar with 3 TBSP milk until smooth.

Step 21

Dip top of each donut in glaze and dip in sugars.

Make the Bavarian Cream per the recipe directions

and place in the refrigerator to completely cool…

I made mine a day ahead…

You’ll want 3 cans of the Pillsbury Dough Sheets and

Mardi Gras Purple, Green, and Yellow sugar…

Lay the dough sheets

on top of each other…

Fold each side in to meet

in the middle like so…

Cut out your dough circles…

Fry them for 1 1/2 minutes

on each side…

They will be gorgeous like this!

Drain on a wire rack and

let cool for 10 minutes…

Fill each donut with the Barvarian Cream…

Dip in the glaze and

then in the sugar mixture…
